![]() How do I know if my battery current sensor is bad?Īs the electrical systems on newer vehicles continue to advance, battery maintenance has become an essential component to keeping vehicles on the road. If your MINI has an IBS module, the new battery will need to be registered to the car once installed. The IBS module is located on the terminal end of the negative battery cable. Once you sort out the battery, you need to determine if your MINI is equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS). The EBS measures the current using a shunt and determines the battery’s voltage and temperature. The electronic battery sensor (EBS) is attached to the negative terminal of a 12V lead-acid battery with the terminal clamp and connected to the vehicle’s body by a screw-on ground cable. This is to alert you that your battery is getting low and the vehicle needs time to charge it before you shut the engine down again. Many BMW owners call us about getting a “battery discharged” message on their dash. How do you test an intelligent battery sensor? Registering your battery lets your engine control module (known as DME - Digital Motor Electronics) know that a new one is installed and as a result, the vehicle will reset the old battery statistics and won’t try to overcharge the new battery thinking the previous one is still inserted. Why do you have to register your BMW battery? Current will bypass the battery current sensor and its readings won’t be accurate. ![]()
